Lahore | Fly Jinnah Pilot Falls Ill Mid-flight, Cabin Crew Dies
Flight heading from Lahore to Karachi forced to reland in Lahore due to climate change after the crew’s health deteriorated. In the incident, two pilots fell ill while one cabin crew passed away.
The incident occurred on May 24, Fly Jinnah’s flight Airbus A320-200, registration AP-BOV was about to depart from Lahore to Karachi when the flight crew stopped the flight at flight level 080 and said it was under pressure. The flight crew later told that the problem had been resolved and requested to continue the climb and was allowed to climb to flight level 360.

Ascending through flight level 230, both the captain and the first officer began to feel dizzy, and drowsy. Both of them put on their oxygen masks, and the flight was stopped from climbing to flight level 270 and asked to land again. During this time, one member of the cabin crew died, and other members of the cabin crew also became ill. The plane returned to Lahore about 45 minutes after departure, Pakistan’s AIB has declared this incident as a serious incident and has started an investigation.
According to experts, the area where the crew fell ill is the most polluted place on the planet. If the plane’s tail is not cleaned properly, there won’t be access to clean cabin air. This is because the quantity is reduced when all the drops of APU oil, hydro, etc. are removed. The nerve gas organophosphates enter the blood.

In the last few years, many such incidents have been reported, especially in Europe. It seems that the nerve gas is contaminated with hydraulic fluid leakage, waste, and oil and gets into the pack and pressurizes the cabin with toxic gases.

Aviation sector Affected due to Climate Change
The profound changes caused by climate change are affecting the aviation sector significantly. I believe that with this global warming, aircraft performance is having a major impact that has already started. Overhauling/revamping the performance charts in their respective POH (Pilots Operating Handbook) in the coming years is a paradigm shift that is coming.
This can result in a longer take-off roll, reduced rate of climb, and reduced fuel efficiency. Today, the hottest temperature on the ground like Delhi is 48-degree temperature on runway 29 L, so it becomes difficult for airplanes to get enough lift from the ground. Warmer temperatures can cause weight restrictions for flight take-off – warmer temperatures are associated with increasingly unpredictable or extreme weather events while melting land ice and warming oceans cause sea levels to rise.

Coastal regions around the world are threatened by the surge. Eurocontrol (the European Association) is currently working to understand the many ways in which climate change is disrupting aviation operations and how stakeholders can develop new levels of resilience. Aviation is one of the most carbon-intensive activities – yet it contributes only 2.5% of the world’s carbon emissions.
