20 per cent upgradation work on Buddhist trail’s sites completed: Official

ISLAMABAD, Jan 30 (APP): Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Directorate of Archaeology and Museums has stepped up its efforts to refurbish all the 22 religious sites, encircling by the Buddhist trail, to attract followers of Buddhism and monks from across the world.

“20 per cent rehabilitation work has been completed on the trail, which starts from Khanpur and culminated at Swat, covering several Buddhist sites, including Julian , Bhamala, Jinnah Wali Dheri, Hund Museum, Rani Ghat, Peshawar Museum, Gor Khatri, Takht Bahi and others,” a senior officer told APP.

He said the provincial government was spending over Rs2 billion to carry out rehabilitation work on the trails which included sites’ fencing, establishment of information centers and many other initiatives. “This includes Rs1 billion each from the World Bank and annual budget of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government,” he added.

The official expressed hope that the upgradation work would be completed withing next two years. He said the Gandhara Civilization was the major source of attraction for the tourists and the followers of Buddhism that was why all-out efforts were being made to upgrade such sites in the province.

The official said promotional campaigns to promote the trail had also been finalized and would be launched in the coming months.
