Afghanistan: More than 3 million girls who were previously enrolled in secondary school have been denied their right to “education since the Taliban takeover,” Save the Children said in a report.

Save the Children called for the ban to be lifted immediately and for girls to have full access to education when schools return on March 21.

“Afghanistan is the only country in the world that has banned girls above sixth grade from education, yet girls here are striving for a better future, and they know the best path to success is through school,” Save the Children’s Acting Country Director for Afghanistan, Olivier Franchi, was quoted as saying in the report. “When their education is cut short, they face increased risk of early marriage, violence, abuse and other forms of exploitation.”

Meanwhile, female students expressed concerns over their uncertain future and called on the Islamic Emirate to reopen the schools for girls in the new educational year.

“All girls in the nation want the doors of the schools to be reopened as only one week remains until the education year starts,” said Nageena, student.

“How long we should wait for the Islamic Emirate to make a decision about so we can fulfil our ambitious,” said Robina, student.

The residents of Kabul also called on the Islamic Emirate to reopen the schools for girls.

“We hope that the Islamic Emirate based on Islamic religion will allow both girls and boys to study,” said Zalmai, a resident of Kabul.

It has been more than 540 days since the schools were closed for girls in grade 7-12. The new educational year will start within the next ten days but there is no information about the fate of female students.
