5G may be available by 2021, hopes PTA

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Monday, informed the Standing Committee of Senate on Information Technology that the commercial launch of 5G telecommunication technology can take around 5 years.

PTA requested two months to establish a complete map for the launch of the technology. Informing the committee, Dr Khawar Siddique Khokhar, a member of PTA reported that the framework for trials of 5G technology was issued. Furthermore, all the network operators tried to conduct 5G technology tests in 2017 and later.

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), Special Communications Organisation (SCO), Mobilink, Zong and Telenor submitted requests for 5G technology trials. 

There still were challenges regarding spectrum and efforts had been made to solve the issue, he added. The effect of technology on human health, security and applications has to be reviewed after which, it will be available by 2021.

The committee ordered to have Senator Attique Shaikh for spectrum cost of 5G. Senator Shehzad Waseem suggested to provide equal opportunity to all operators to for 5G.
