9-year-old boy dies after Astroworld festival crush
Nov 15, 2021: A 9-year-old boy has become the youngest person to die after being injured during a crowd crush at the Astro World Music Festival in Houston, USA.
Family Attorney Ben Krump said Dallas’ Azra Blount died Sunday at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.
Ezra was placed in a medically induced coma on November 5 after suffering severe injuries from crushing spectators during a performance by festival headliner, rapper Travis Scott.
He is the 10th person to succumb to the stampede at the festival. Ezra’s father, Tristan Blount, stated in a November 5 post on a GoFundMe page that he had set up to help pay for Ezra’s medical expenses. He said Ezra was sitting on his shoulders when he was crushed by a mob. Blount said he became unconscious, and Ezra was missing when he returned. A desperate search continued until Ezra was finally found in the hospital, critically injured.
The child suffered severe brain, kidney and liver damage after the concert and his family filed a lawsuit against Scott and event organizer, Live Nation, alleging “kicking, stepping, trampling, and almost crushing”.
Blount’s family is demanding at least 1 million in damages. The other victims ranged in age from 14 to 27. About 300 people were treated at the festival site, and 13 were hospitalized.
Meanwhile, the Houston police and fire department investigators have said they are reviewing surveillance video provided by concert promoter Live Nation, as well as dozens of clips people at the show widely shared on social media.
Investigators also planned to speak with Live Nation representatives, Scott and concertgoers.
Scott and the event organizers are now the focus of a criminal investigation.
