Nawaz Sharif strongly condemns Khawaja Asif’s arrest

Lahore, 30th December: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday arrested the parliamentary leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Khawaja Muhammad Asif from outside the residence of another senior PML-N leader in Islamabad where he had come to attend a party meeting.

Baaghi TV: The dramatic arrest of the stalwart opposition leader evoked a strong reaction from his party members.

PML-N supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif condemned Khawaja Asif’s arrest. He took to his Twitter account and termed his arrest as the nexus between the selectors and the selected.

He wrote, “The arrest of Khawaja Asif is a highly reprehensible incident between the selectors and the selected nexus. The government’s bewilderment can be gauged from such heinous acts, but they are bringing their fate closer. The days of blind political revenge are numbered.”

Supremo’s daughter and PML-N vice president retweeted Nawaz Sharif’s tweet on her official account. Maryam Nawaz, who was also present in the meeting at the party by their secretary-general Ahsan Iqbal, alleged that NAB had acted like a ‘terrorist’ and ‘kidnapped’ Asif in the darkness of night.

Murtaza Ali Shah, a renowned journalist from the Geo News shared a video of Nawaz Sharif, addressing media in London yesterday.

Shah earlier tweeted, “Khawaja Asif was told that NAB cases against him will be dropped if he goes against Nawaz Sharif’s narrative but he refused and said he’s ready to face any consequences and today he was arrested, @MaryamNSharif says.”

When a reporter asked Khawaja Asif to elaborate on a statement made by Maryam Nawaz claiming that Asif had been told all cases against him would be written off if he stood against Nawaz Sharif, the ex-defence minister said: “This is what we are all being told.”

Meanwhile, during a news conference in Karachi, PPP chairman Bilawal Zardari had also condemned Khawaja Asif’s arrest and termed it a step against the country’s stability.

It is pertinent to note that PML-N leader Khawaja Asif was arrested by NAB on Tuesday night in a case pertaining to acquiring assets beyond means of income.
