June 14, 2021: China on Monday accused the G7 of “political manipulation” after criticizing Beijing over its human rights record in Xinjiang and Hong Kong.
In a speech after the three-day summit in England, the G7 leaders chanted China’s slogan against atrocities against minorities in the Xinjiang region and pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong, while US President Joe Biden called on Beijing. That they “start working more responsibly. International human rights principles.” The Chinese embassy in the UK responded angrily on Monday, accusing the G7 of “interference”.
An embassy spokesman said in a statement: “The Group of Seven (G7) is taking advantage of Xinjiang-related issues to engage in political maneuvering and interference in China’s internal affairs, which we strongly oppose.
The statement accused the G7 of “lies, rumors and baseless allegations.” Human rights groups say China has included an estimated one million Uighurs and other minorities in internment camps in Xinjiang. “We will promote our values, including calling on China to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms,” he said.
At their first physical summit in nearly two years, the leaders of the seven countries announced a number of commitments related to COVID 19 vaccination, climate change, rights and trade. They also called for a new investigation into the beginning of the Cove 19 in China, a response from the Chinese embassy that it needed to be carried out in a scientific, objective and fair manner, without agreeing to a new investigation.
“The current epidemic is still sweeping the globe, and it is up to global scientists to find out and not politicize it,” the embassy said. The corona virus first appeared in central China in late 2019, and the World Health Organization sent a team of international experts in January to investigate its origin.
But the long-awaited report, published in March, did not produce a solid conclusion, and the investigation has since been criticized for its lack of transparency and accessibility. The G7 also announced a new infrastructure fund, which President Biden said would be “more equivalent” to China’s large-scale Belt and Road Initiative.
A statement from the Chinese embassy said, “Allegations against China on economic and trade issues in communication are contradictory and unreasonable.”
