Lahore, 21st June: In the budget 2021-22 no money has been allocated for the establishment of the much-promoted University of Gwadar.
According to the spokesperson of the Balochistan government, no money has yet been granted for the University of Gwadar in the federal budget or Balochistan’s budget.
As per reports, last week, Balochistan passed a budget with a total expenditure of Rs 584.1 billion, in which Rs 17 billion was set aside for education. However, no allocation was made in the budget for the first and only university to be built in Gwadar.
According to Gwadar’s Master Plan, the harbor town is touted to be South East Asia’s new center for trade, tourism and investment with an economy of $30 billion by 2050.
Balochistan government’s spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani revealed to Geo.TV that the budget of the provincial government does not have any amount earmarked for the university in Gwadar.
It is to be noted that in May 2017, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced opening a university in Gwadar as part of a development package for the port city.
Later, in November 2018, consent for the university was assessed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the Balochistan Assembly passed the bill for the establishment of the university.
This year on June 11, protesters, including activists, student organizations and political party leaders, took to the streets and demanded that an area be allocated as a center for higher education.
It is pertinent to mention here that Gwadar has earned global attention due to its geostrategic, geo-economic and geopolitical location.
