July 7, 2021: The outbreak of Covid 19 on China’s insecure border with Myanmar has taken new cases to the country’s highest level in six months, according to official figures on Wednesday, despite tight security measures.

The corona virus first appeared in central China in late 2019, but a series of drastic measures and stringent border restrictions have largely succeeded in resolving issues within its borders. But on Wednesday, 57 new infections were reported – the highest number since the end of January – including 15 in the city, Rulli bordering Myanmar.

Twelve of them were Myanmar nationals, according to health officials in Greece, who said the outbreak was attributed to the highly contagious Delta variety, which was first detected in India. Rulli is a major crossing point for music from Muse in neighboring Myanmar, which has seen unrest escalate since the February 1 military coup, raising fears that people will cross the border into China to escape the violence.

The provincial governor said on Tuesday that authorities would “completely plug in all the flaws that could lead to the import of the virus”. According to officials, all 210,000 residents of the city have been tested by Monday night, with 90 cases reported in the city over the past week. Rulli has also been placed under lockdown while residents have been told to stay home and all schools and businesses are closed.

After another small outbreak in April, this is the second time in four months that Rulli has been shut down after cases of imports from Myanmar were discovered. In March, China closed the border crossing to Myanmar, escalating cross-border tensions. Authorities have also stepped up troop patrols to crack down on illegal border crossings and cracked down on human trafficking to stem the flow of refugees. The other 42 cases reported on Wednesday were imported from abroad.
