The UK has started imposing sanctions on the world’s most corrupt people as part of efforts to combat world corruption.
British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab says the UK has imposed sanctions on five people to curb global corruption. These so-called corrupt people are from Equatorial Guinea, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, and Iraq.
One of the five people banned by the UK spent $275,000 USD on palaces, private jets, and Michael Jackson’s gloves. In addition to freezing their assets, the UK has imposed travel bans on them. As such, they can neither send currency nor solicit any money through UK banks.
According to reports, back in April, the UK imposed sanctions on 22 people, 14 of which were Russian, as part of their new anti-corruption regime. These individuals were involved in several notorious corruption cases, and some of them belonged to South Africa, South Sudan, and Latin America. They had their assets frozen, had travel bans imposed on them, and were also now unable to channel their money through UK banks, as well as were banned from entering the UK.
Dominic Raab, the British Foreign Secretary, emphasized on UK’s responsibility on combating corruption, stating that the nation was a “honey pot for corrupt actors”.
