A powerful explosion shook the city of Leverkusen, Germany as clouds of deep black smoke continued to rise after the fire broke out at the site of the blast.
According to the details, two people have been killed and sixteen others were injured in the crash while five people are still missing. According to media reports, the blast took place at a chemical park in Leverkusen, 20 km north of Cologne, the fourth largest city in Europe.
Rescuers rushed to the scene immediately after the crash. The fire at the site has been contained and a search for the missing has been launched. Corinth, the chemical park’s watchdog, said the time of the blast was 9:40 a.m. The blast took place in a chemical waste collection pond and after the blast, a fire broke out in the waste in the pond. Emergency sirens were also sounded after the blast to alert the public and employees.

It is reported that the situation in the surrounding areas is under control. The German Disaster Management Agency described the blast as extremely dangerous. The agency has instructed all citizens in the vicinity to stay indoors. It was also said that citizens should turn off all their air drainage systems so that they can be protected from polluted air.
The German Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has warned people to keep their windows and doors closed. No information has been provided about the five missing persons so far. Sixteen injured have been shifted to hospitals. The municipality of Leverkusen described the condition of the four injured as critical on its Facebook page. Investigators and administrative officials have not yet been able to determine the cause of the explosion, however, details of the blast site have not been released.

Authorities appear to be investigating. Leverkusen’s chemical park is located in the Boring area. It is separate from the main industrial park. Many important industrial units are located in Leverkusen. Many internationally renowned chemical companies have set up factories in the industrial park, including Bayer. Lancashire and Ionic are particularly notable.
Police cordoned off the chemical park after the crash, while a large number of firefighters and rescue workers are also involved in the rescue operation. Cologne police have also announced a temporary closure of motorways leading to Leverkusen.
