Indian web series ‘The Empire’, based on Muslim history, has been dubbed desi ‘Game of Thrones’ by fans after watching its trailer.

As viewers of the show know, the massively popular Game of Thrones is set in a medieval historical setting, with its story revolving around wars between kingdoms and family politics, and after watching The Empire’s trailer, fans found that it takes much inspiration from it.

Numerous Indian dramas and films based on history, especially those on Muslim conquests, have been accused of copying Game of Thrones, but this soon-to-be-released web series is being straight-up dubbed “desi Game of Thrones”.

Many on Twitter tweeted scenes and trailers of the show, saying that they were reminded of Game of Thrones after watching.

Some also called it a rip-off of popular Bollywood films Padmavat and Bajirao Mastani.

The story of The Empire revolves around Muslim conquests and is adapted from the popular novelist Alex Rutherford’s urban novels series “Empire of the Moghals”.

It will depict the conquests and reign of Mughal emperor Zahir-ud-Din Babar, the role of whom is being played by actor Kunal Kapoor. Babar’s son, Humayun, is being depicted by Aditya Seal.

Many actors, including Shabana Azmi and Dino Morea, have roles in the series, and the release of the trailer suggests that the show is not a mere Game of Thrones copy – but rather a historical show, taking inspiration from many other shows.

In the trailer, we see the characters of Babur, Humayun, Khanzada Begum and Muhammad Sheibani being played.

The Empire is being produced by Nikhil Advani and directed by Matakshara Kumar and will be released on Hot Star on August 27.
