Aug 12, 2021: Afghan government forces continue to fight Taliban fighters in and around several cities as the Taliban aggressively pursue their offensive that according to US intelligence will allow them to capture Kabul within 90 days.

Fighting continues in Lashkar Gah, one of Afghanistan’s largest cities, located in the Taliban stronghold of Helmand Province, where government forces are expected to hold on to the capital after the Taliban’s week-long offensive. Some none other capitals have already been captured by the Taliban.

The Lashkar Gah regional police headquarters was taken over by an armed group, some police officers surrendered to the militants and some retreated to the nearby governor’s office, which is still held by government forces.

Meanwhile, the Taliban appeared to be putting pressure on Ghazni, the capital of Ghazni Province, about 130 kilometers southwest of the capital Kabul.  The fiercest fighting is near the intelligence headquarters as special forces and the army fight to push back the Taliban.

The Taliban have seized the police headquarters in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital of southern Afghanistan, which is on the verge of being lost to the Taliban as suspected US airstrikes hit the area, an official said.

On Wednesday, a suicide car bombing marked the latest wave of attacks on the capital’s regional police headquarters.

By Thursday, the Taliban had taken control of the building, Helmand police lawmaker Naseema Niazi said, adding that some police officers had surrendered to the group and others had retreated to the nearby governor’s office.

Meanwhile, Taliban have successfully breached the central prison of Kandahar.

According to a UN spokesperson, some 390,000 people have already been displaced because of the conflict.
