India Closes Down Afghan Consulates as Taliban Gain Power

Kabul: India has closed down all units of its consulate in Afghanistan as the Taliban gain power. The Taliban have been blamed for searching the closed down embassy buildings.

According to reports, India has a total of 4 embassies in Afghanistan, apart from just the one in Kabul.

India, which appears to be friendly to the Taliban has closed down all of its four consulates, leaving Afghanistan completely.

In contrast, however, the Pakistani embassy is still open and issuing visas to the Afghan nationals who wish to leave the country. Pakistan’s Ambassador to Afghanistan Mansoor Ahmad Khan himself is currently in Afghanistan.

Indian media, on the other hand, has blamed the Afghan Taliban for searching the closed down consulates. They have accused the Taliban of searching two of their consulate buildings.

Reports state that the Indian media have quoted Afghan sources claiming that the Taliban searched the Indian consulate offices in Kandahar and Herat with the aim of obtaining crucial documents.

According to sources, parked vehicles were seen outside the consulate buildings, but whether the Taliban had taken any documents from them is unclear.

Indian media has also claimed that door-to-door checks are being conducted to find those working for the Afghan intelligence agency, NDS, after the Taliban took control of Kabul.

It may be recalled that apart from the Indian Embassy in Afghanistan, their consulates in Mazar-e-Sharif, Herat, and Kandahar were still running, but as soon as control of Kabul fell into the hands of the Taliban, India stopped its diplomatic mission in Afghanistan and withdrew all staff.

Two days ago, a video of the Taliban helping Indian diplomatic staff leave Afghanistan also surfaced.
