The situation at Kabul airport has led to increasingly desperate bids to get people set to be evacuated to the airport.  Taliban forces have overthrown the Afghan government and taken control of the country after seizing the capital, Kabul.

According to Safe Airspace, Afghanistan’s airspace is now effectively closed to overflights – the OAKX/Kabul FIR is uncontrolled, and overflying traffic should route around the country. OAKB/Kabul airport is closed to all flights except limited military evacuations.

Prior to the Taliban takeover, several countries already had existing airspace warnings in place – the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), France and Canada advised that overflights should not be below flight level (FL) 250/260, with Germany advising FL330. France has since updated its warning and are now advising operators avoid Afghan airspace entirely.

As Afghanistan falls to Taliban on August 15, people from the country started fleeing the war-torn country. Visuals of crowded Kabul runway, cargo jets cramped with people and horrifying scenes of children being handed over barbed wires have filled the internet.
