Aug 26, 2021: PM Imran Khan on Thursday praised the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) for working with countries around the world to provide emergency food aid and improve nutrition and resilience.
PM Imran Khan’s statement came during a meeting with David Beasley, Executive Director of the United Nations WFP in Islamabad. The UN agency is currently providing food aid to Afghanistan as it struggles with uncertainty following the Taliban takeover of the country.
In his conversation with the WFP chief, PM Imran Khan reiterated that the formation of a comprehensive Afghan government and the positive involvement of the international community is the way to avoid any humanitarian crisis and secure peace in Afghanistan.
PM Imran Khan emphasized that Pakistan was benefiting from the various WFP projects being implemented in the country and appreciated its partnership with the organization.
Executive Director Beasley thanked Pakistan for its role in facilitating the WFP’s work in providing food aid to Afghans. They also discussed ways to continue providing humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.
Earlier, the WFP chief shared a video from the federal capital on his Twitter handle, in which food agency helicopters and planes were being repaired, thanking Pakistan for its help.
“The Pakistani government has really helped us to bring the plane that crashed in Kabul here for repairs,” he said in the clip.
According to Beasley, test flights are being conducted from Islamabad to Kabul in the hope of “exterior to interior” to build the air bridge. It aims to bring UN officials, NGOs and aid workers to Afghanistan.
“We will have these fixed-wings moving passengers, UN officials, the WFP and other humanitarian workers, so that we can not only sustain our operations but also expand them in Afghanistan which is critical with all the destruction inside. The hope is to bring life back to normal and give hope to those who are frustrated now.”
