Oct 10, 2021: Pakistan’s renowned scientist and an integral part of the country’s nuclear program, Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, 85, passed away Sunday after his health deteriorated.
Dr. AQ Khan is considered the father of Pakistan’s nuclear program and is revered at home as a hero for building the country’s first atomic bomb.
Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan’s health started deteriorating on Saturday night, after which he was brought to KRL Hospital in an ambulance on Sunday morning at 6 am. Sources said that the nuclear scientist had difficulty in breathing after which he was brought to the hospital. However, his health worsened when he started bleeding from his lungs.
Despite multiple recovery and resuscitation attempts by doctors, he died at 7:04 in the morning. Doctors have said that Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan died due to damage to his lungs.
The hospital administration is trying to make arrangements for the transfer of Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan’s body to his E-7 residence. His family said his funeral prayers would be offered at 3:30 pm at the Faisal Mosque in Islamabad.
The interior minister Sheikh Rasheed said Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan had helped him a lot in educational activities, adding that he had remained a visionary leader in times when Pakistan was going through a sensitive time.
Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan became a national hero overnight, not only in Pakistan but also in the Islamic world, when in May 1998, Pakistan conducted its own nuclear test and gave India an appropriate response.
After the sucessful tests, Pakistan became the only nuclear power in the Muslim world and the seventh country to have nuclear weapons. Pakistan’s nuclear weapons have stopped Indian aggression.
President Arif Ali also offered condolences at the death of the famous scientist.

Other political figures also shared their sadness at the death of Dr Abdul Qadeer, including Asad Umar and Pervez Khattak along with Shafqat Mahmood, Fawad Chaudhry and Farukh Habib.

Regarded as an integral part of Pakistan’s nuclear program, Dr Abdul Qadeer was born to a Muslim family in 1936, in Bhopal, India, and later went on to become a renowned Pakistani metallurgist and nuclear scientist.
In 1967, he acquired his engineering degree from a university in the Netherlands in and later went on to secure a doctorate in metallurgical engineering from Belgium.
He was also rewarded for his work on the state level, gaving received three presidential medals. He has been awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Order of Excellence) twice and the Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Crescent of Excellence) once.
