Kuala Lampur: Malaysia has decided to reopen its borders to international visitors by January 1st, as the country seeks to replenish its decrepit tourism sector.
The country has decided to slowly reopen its economy as seen in recent weeks as Covid-19 infection rates have decreased due to a successful vaccination program. About three-quarters of Malaysia’s 32 million population are now vaccinated, according to government statistics.
Muhyiddin Yassin, Former prime minister, who chairs a council tasked with undertaking Malaysia’s economic recovery program, told the press that the tourism industry was recovering too slowly without foreigners.
According to Muhyiddin, infection control measures such as Covid-19 tests will continue, with authorities to determine entry based on the Covid-19 situation in originating countries.
He did not tell when reopening will be announced, but said that the decision was still being detailed by health and security agencies.
