UAE crown prince and President Erdoğan discuss Turkey-UAE ties in phone call
Dec 2, 2021: President Recep Tayyip Erdoan discussed bilateral relations in a phone call with Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (MBZ) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a Presidential Communications Directorate statement said on Wednesday.
The two leaders discussed steps to be taken to enhance relations and regional developments, the statement said. Erdogan also congratulated MBZ on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the UAE.
Last week, Erdogan hosted MBZ as the two countries seek to mend fences and boost economic cooperation.
The Crown Prince’s visit, seen as a real leader and behind-the-scenes force in the UAE’s foreign policy, was his first official visit to Turkey since 2012, and is the first of its kind by an Emirati official since the breakdown in relations.
The two countries have previously both fought for regional influence and supported opposing sides in conflicts. The Crown Prince’s brother, Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s national security adviser, visited Turkey in August, the first major step in improving strained relations.
After Ankara accused the United Arab Emirates of financing the 2016 coup plotters in Turkey and harming Turkish interests in Libya, Turkish officials called the MBZ visit a “new step” after years of hostility and the dawn of a new era.Erdogan plans to visit the United Arab Emirates in February to further strengthen ties.
