Dec 20, 2021: The UAE announced on Sunday that it would no longer censor cinema releases, introducing a 21-year-old rating for movies that it rates for an adult audience.
The United Arab Emirates, consisting of seven emirates, is considered one of the more liberal countries in the Gulf region, where films with adult content are routinely cut or edited. The federation has been constantly revising its laws in recent years, presenting itself as a modern force in a largely conservative region.
The country’s media regulatory office said on Twitter that it had introduced a 21+ age group in its motion picture content rating system.
“According to this classification, the international version of movies will be shown in cinemas, with an emphasis on the strict following of age classification standards for audience entry,” it added.
Late last year, the UAE revised a set of rules in a social liberalization campaign designed to build its progressive brand.
These included lifting the ban on living together of unmarried couples, easing alcohol restrictions and offering long-term residence.
Earlier this month, the UAE announced it would run a Western-style weekend, with experts saying it was an attempt to maintain its lead over growing regional rivals. From January 1, 2022, the UAE will be the only Gulf country that will not observe a holiday on Friday.
