Jan 8, 2022: Iran on Saturday imposed sanctions on dozens of Americans, most of them members of the US military, over the 2020 death of General Qasim Soleimani in a drone strike.
Iran’s foreign ministry says 51 Americans have been targeted for “terrorism” and human rights abuses. The move would allow the Iranian authorities to seize any assets in Iran, but the apparent absence of such assets would likely be symbolic. The ministry said in a statement issued through local media that 51 people had been arrested “for their role in the terrorist act against the martyred General Qasim Soleimani and his associates and for promoting terrorism and violation of basic human rights.”
The commander of Iran’s Quds Force, a group of Revolutionary Guards abroad, Qassem Soleimani was killed in a drone strike in Iraq on January 3, 2020, at the behest of then-President Donald Trump. Those on Iran’s sanctions list include US General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former White House National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien.
In a similar move announced a year ago, Iran imposed sanctions on Trump and several senior US officials for “acts of terrorism and human rights abuses.”
Speaking on the second anniversary of Soleimani’s assassination, Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi said that Trump would have to face a murder trial this week or else Tehran would take revenge. The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on Iranian officials, politicians and companies since the United States pulled out of Tehran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers in 2018.
Iran and the United States are currently holding indirect talks in Vienna to save the 2015 agreement.
