Jan 11, 2022: Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Monday urged Romanian investors and businessmen to take advantage of the vast opportunities for trade and investment in Pakistan.

Addressing a joint press conference with his Romanian counterpart Bogdan Aurescu, the Foreign Minister said that for Romanian investors not only the development of bilateral trade relations but also the prospects of Pakistan becoming a hub for exports to Central Asia. He said that Pakistan was building an economic corridor with China and the construction of Gwadar Port would open the world to the landlocked Central Asian Republic and Afghanistan.

According to his Romanian counterpart, he added that despite the COVID challenge, bilateral trade between the two countries increased by about 50.6% during the last financial year. However, this was not close to real potential in the context of their bilateral relations and trade opportunities with the European Union, he observed.

The Foreign Minister said that Pakistan is in an advantageous position. With GSP + status, he felt it had been mutually beneficial for both the EU and Pakistan. He added that “Pakistan has been a major trader of the European Union and Pakistan has very important relations with the European Union and its members.”

Memoranda of Understanding were signed to enhance bilateral cooperation between business entities as well as to provide scholarships to Pakistani students.

Citing the signing of an agreement between the two countries’ chambers, Qureshi said it would open new avenues for the corporate and private sectors. The private sector has been and will continue to be a driving force in enhancing bilateral trade relations between Pakistan and Romania. The Foreign Minister said that Pakistan and Romania have excellent diplomatic relations spanning over 58 years and are supporting each other at multilateral level.

“I want to acknowledge that besides excellent bilateral relations and goodwill to each other, our exchanges are frequent. I am here with a very determined view to initiate a new era in our bilateral ties,” he said expressing the optimism that his visit would set a new tone for the new era of bilateral relations.

According to an APP report, an MoU was signed for the provision of educational scholarships to Pakistani students by Bucharest Polytechnical University. Ambassador Dr Zafar Iqbal signed the MoU from the Pakistani side while University Rector Mihnea Cosmin Costoiu represented Romania. An MOU was also signed between the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and the Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The document was signed by Pakistan’s Ambassador in Romania Dr Zafar Iqbal.

The Foreign Minister also expressed the belief that the education agreement would benefit Pakistani students. He thanked the Romanian government and its people, the Prime Minister and the people of Pakistan for generously donating 5,000 doses of Corona virus vaccine to Pakistan.
