Who is PM Johnson likely to be succeeded by?

In the wake of Downing Street’s 2020 party, Tory MPs are on the brink of change with one likely candidate tipped as a replacement for PM Boris Johnson – Chancellor Rishi Sunak.
According to international media reports, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is likely to be replaced and/or step down from office following a no-confidence vote. It is believed that the ‘flames of despair’ concerning Johnson’s leadership have returned full force, although Conservative optimists had expressed hope that the situation will settle, however, an apology made by the current PM is not being met in a cordial manner. It is presumed that an apology is not an appropriate resolution for the party conundrum.

Given the situation, Boris Johnson is likely to be succeeded as Prime Minister by Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, who although is inexperienced has the public’s favour. Experts believe that although Johnson has apologized over the embarrassing debacle, it only serves the purpose of making things clear that the UK govt led by Johnson committed an ‘insensitive breach’ during the first lockdown post-Covid-19. Furthermore, it shows that the UK’s Prime Miniter lacks moral and/or political credibility according to a report published in The Guardian.
It is pertinent to note that as dark clouds continue to loom over his leadership, the Conservatives Party has demanded Johnson step aside. Thereby, Sunak is being tipped as a likely candidate for office. The UK-born Indian political figure is known for being pro-Brexit and a staunch supporter of the UK exiting the European Union (EU). In addition, Sunak reportedly made history in 2020 as the first exchequer of Indian origin when he was appointed to a significant position in the UK’s cabinet.

According to The Guardian, however, his inexperience may prove to be a major hurdle as most Tory MPs are of the opinion, with one commenting, “the honest answer is that we really don’t know if he cuts it”. Meanwhile, given the recent state-of-affairs, it is unprecedented that the Tory’s now hold the deciding power to choose the next Prime Minister. Nonetheless, if Sunak does indeed come into the office, he will be the first person of South Asian heritage, and a person of color, to become the UK’s Prime Minister.
It is pertinent to note that Rishi Sunak entered the House of Commons in 2015 and has been serving as a minister since 2018. His ascent to the position of Chancellor is believed to be unusually rapid and a matter of concern because his inexperience is causing the public’s favour to slowly dissipate given the nature of some of Sunak’s recent political decisions such as the impending rise in taxes and energy charges.
