Hijab Row: Uttar Pradesh also expels students from class
New Delhi: Under the banner of the Narendra Modi government, Hindu extremism is on the rise across India, as hijabi female students are expelled from class in Uttar Pradesh.
According to Indian media reports, in a college in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, a Muslim student was expelled from class for wearing a hijab. The principal and teachers also asked the students to abide by the rules of uniform, instead of helping the student. The college principal said that in order for everyone to look the same, the rules must be followed and uniformity must be observed.
Earlier, Hindu extremists had hinted at prohibiting female students from wearing hijab in schools in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The Madhya Pradesh education minister, Inder Singh Parmar, had said that the state would soon ban the wearing of hijab as it was not part of the uniform. Every school has its own dress, children are identified only when they come to school wearing school dress.

In addition, TEDx speaker Sanjukta Basu has tweeted that the issue has become international although the “Indian Supreme Court said in the morning, ‘Don’t make it a national issue.’” Moreover, Rashad Hussain, a senior official with the American Institute for Religious Freedom, said in a statement on the social networking site Twitter that prohibiting the wearing of the hijab in educational institutions by the Indian state of Karnataka is in violation of an individual’s religious freedom.
