Mar 16, 2022: India reacts sharply to UN resolution on World Islamophobia March 15.
According to international media reports, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN TS Trimurti told the UN General Assembly that India hopes that the resolution will not set a precedent for future religion-specific phobia resolutions and that the United Nations should not take the form of a religious camp.
Indian Ambassador TS Trimurti complained that the resolution did not cover anti-Hindu phobia, among other religions.
“Member states should not forget that we have International Day of Tolerance on November 16,” he said. A phobia against a religion alone does not need to be celebrated as World Day.
It should be noted that the resolution of Pakistan and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to observe the International Day against Islamophobia has been approved by the UN General Assembly. The OIC resolution was introduced two years ago when a right-wing extremist killed more than 50 worshipers in a terrorist attack on two New Zealand mosques.
Reacting to the adoption of the resolution, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti said in the UN General Assembly that India hopes the resolution adopted “does not set a precedent” which will lead to multiple resolutions on phobias based on selective religions and divide the United Nations into religious camps.
The resolution was tabled on Tuesday by Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations on behalf of the OIC.
