The Supreme Court of Pakistan announced decision on a series of appeals challenging the recently passed Supreme Court (Review of Judgments and Orders) Act 2023 and declared it null and void.
The case was heard on June 19 by a three-member bench led by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, along with Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Ijazul Ahsan. During the proceedings, Chief Justice Bandial highlighted the importance of consulting experienced legal minds before enacting significant laws, referencing professionals like the attorney general for Pakistan (AGP) for valuable insights.
He also recognized the complexities involved and stressed the need for careful drafting to protect the judiciary’s integrity.
AGP Mansoor Usman Awan and PTI lawyer Ali Zafar presented their arguments, and the court reserved its verdict, which will be announced following internal discussions.
