Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially handed over the G20 presidency to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, marking a ceremonial transfer of leadership. Lula da Silva commended India for giving voice to issues of interest to emerging economies during the G20 summit.
During the “One Earth, One Family” sessions, Prime Minister Modi expressed satisfaction that the G20 had evolved into a platform for positive efforts in line with the vision of “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”
President Lula da Silva congratulated PM Modi and identified G20 priorities, including social inclusion, the fight against hunger, energy transition, and sustainable development. He emphasized the need for new developing countries to join the UN Security Council as permanent and non-permanent members to enhance its political influence. Lula da Silva also advocated for increased representation of emerging countries at the World Bank and the IMF.
Key outcomes of the G20 summit included a call to address the “global trust deficit,” the establishment of the Global Biofuel Alliance, and the launch of new connectivity networks involving the US, India, Saudi Arabia, and Gulf states.
The G20 members unanimously adopted the Delhi Declaration, urging nations to uphold territorial integrity, international humanitarian law, and the multilateral system to maintain peace and stability. China and Russia, despite their leaders’ absence at the summit, endorsed the Delhi declaration.
While the declaration discouraged the use of force to acquire territory, it refrained from explicitly condemning Russia for its actions in Ukraine, drawing criticism from Ukraine’s foreign ministry.
Additionally, the G20 pledged to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030 and expedite efforts to reduce coal power, considering individual circumstances. The bloc committed to upholding its 2009 promise to eliminate and rationalize inefficient fossil fuel subsidies.
In a significant move, the African Union was granted permanent membership in the G20, enhancing the representation of developing nations in global decision-making.
Before the summit’s sessions, delegates paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial, Rajghat, in Delhi. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant were scheduled to address the media following the conclusion of all discussions.
