Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in his address at the UN General Assembly’s 78th session, raised the matter of Kashmir and called for a just and lasting peace in the region through dialogue and cooperation between India and Pakistan. Erdogan expressed Turkey’s continued support for efforts in this direction. This statement comes following his recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where discussions revolved around enhancing trade and infrastructure ties.

Erdogan also commended India’s role at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and advocated for expanding the UNSC by adding five permanent and fifteen “temporary” members as permanent ones in rotation. He stressed that the world extends beyond the existing five permanent members, emphasizing the need for greater representation.

Erdogan has consistently brought up the Kashmir issue in his UN General Assembly addresses in recent years, expressing hope for a fair and lasting peace and prosperity in the region.

He highlighted humanitarian crises, political conflicts, and social tensions worldwide, exacerbated by economic problems. Erdogan expressed concern over terrorism’s use in proxy wars, particularly in Syria, North Africa, and the Sahel, undermining global security.

The Turkish President also emphasized the rising threats of xenophobia, racism, and Islamophobia globally, calling for their resolution to promote social harmony.

Erdogan expressed gratitude for international support following a devastating earthquake in Turkey, and Turkey’s humanitarian aid efforts in Libya after severe storms and floods.

He discussed Turkey’s international engagement, including efforts to mediate the Russian-Ukrainian war and highlighted the Black Sea Initiative’s role in preventing global hunger crises.

Erdogan advocated for reforming the United Nations, asserting that the current institutions no longer reflect today’s world. He stressed that the Security Council’s role as a guarantor of world security has diminished, calling for a reevaluation of international institutions.

Lastly, Erdogan emphasized the need to eradicate hunger and poverty, urging all nations to demonstrate a strong commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goals in the 21st century.
