President Dr. Arif Alvi approved a 90-day reduction in the sentences of prisoners on Eid Milad-ul-Nabi (SAW).
The reduced sentences will not apply to criminals convicted of murder, espionage and anti-state activities, adultery, theft, robbery, kidnapping and terrorism.
The reduction in sentence will also not be applicable to criminals involved in financial crimes and causing damage to the national exchequer, while it will be applicable to male prisoners above 65 years of age who have served one-third of their imprisonment.
Female prisoners over the age of 60 who have served one-third of their sentences will also have their sentences reduced, while those below 18 years of age who have served one-third of their sentences will also have their sentences reduced.
The President has approved the reduction of sentences under Article 45 of the Constitution.
