Oscar-nominated American actor, Ryan O’Neal, popularly known for his role in the 1970’s Love Story has passed away at 82, as confirmed by his son. 

The actor’s family has not revealed his cause of death, however, O’Neal was reportedly diagnosed with chronic leukemia in 2001, and prostate cancer in 2012. 

Remembering his father, O’Neal’s son, Patrick O’Neal said the actor was “a Hollywood legend. Full stop.” He added that the veteran actor passed away “peacefully” with his “loving team by his side supporting him”.

Apart from the iconic role of an upper-crust Harvard Graduate in the romantic tragedy, Love Story (1970) alongside Ali MacGraw, Ryan O’Neal starred in What’s Up, Doc? (1972) with Barbara Streisand, Paper Moon (1973), 90210 (2008-2013), Desperate Housewives (2004-2012), Bones (2005-2017), and many more.

Upon hearing of his passing, O’Neal’s co-star Streisand took to X (formerly Twitter) to write: “He was funny and charming, and he will be remembered”.

Despite making a mark in the 1970s Ryan O’Neal’s stardom gradually faded. According to a BBC report, only the actor’s “turbulent personal life kept him in the headlines”. Born in 1941 to a stage actress and a novelist, screenwriter father, O’Neal was interested in boxing which helped him to develop an “impressive physique” before he could land his earlier television roles.

After being cast in Peyton Place (1964-1969), one of America’s first prime-time soap operas, O’Neal made a name for himself and was allowed to appear on the big screen. 

O’Neal had four children from three relationships: first, a daughter, Tatum O’Neal, and a son Griffin O’Neal with US actress Joanna Moore, another son Patrick O’Neal from his second marriage to Emmy-winning actress Leigh Taylor-Young and a fourth son Redmond with co-star and long-term partner, Farrah Fawcett. 

In a 2011 with Piers Morgan, O’Neal said that rewatching Love Story is upsetting. O’Neal said: “I lost Farrah to cancer, and I just wonder [why] that played out that way for me”.

Following his death, Patrick O’Neal has paid tribute to the actor saying he was, “skilled at his craft, worked so hard, and just loved acting plain and simple”. Patrick O’Neal said that his father was “as generous as they come” adding that he was funny, handsome, and charming, a “Lethal combo”. According to BBC, remembering his father’s long-time partner Farrah Fawcett, Patrick said, “Now they meet again. Farrah and Ryan. He has missed her terribly. What an embrace that must be. Together again”.
