GAZA/PALESTINE: Independent US senator Bernie Sanders is demanding answers for Israel’s continued “indiscriminate” bombing in Gaza.
According to the British Daily The Guardian, Senator Sanders has proposed a resolution to investigate the ongoing “humanitarian cataclysm… being done with American bombs and money”. Sanders’ demand comes amidst a new wave of scrutiny in Washington over US support for the Israeli genocide.

Stressing the killing of almost 19,000 people and over 50,000 injured in Gaza, the US senator has said it is time to force a debate on the bombings being carried out by Netanyahu’s government with support from US “complicity”. In a statement, Sanders said: “This is a humanitarian cataclysm, and it is being done with American bombs and money. We need to face up to that fact – and then we need to end our complicity in those actions”.
According to The Guardian, if the resolution proposed by Sanders is passed, the State Department will be compelled to report any violations of human rights caused by “indiscriminate or disproportionate” military operations in Gaza to the US Congress, including the government’s “blanket denial of basic humanitarian needs”. Moreover, the State Department would also have to report any actions taken by the US to limit civilian risk by Israel in Gaza/Palestine along with a summary of arms provided to the IDF, an assessment of Israeli compliance with international humanitarian law, and a certification to prove the IDF have not committed human rights violations.

Speaking against the Israeli genocide in Gaza, Sanders said: “the Netanyahu government’s indiscriminate bombing is immoral, it is in violation of international law, and the Congress must demand answers about the conduct of this campaign. A just cause for war does not excuse atrocities in the conduct of that war.”
While it is too soon to predict if the resolution will be passed, its timing indicates the pressure is mounting to consider the human rights and political concerns surrounding the genocide in Gaza. On the other hand, for the resolution to be passed it will have to be approved by a majority in the Senate, including the House of Representatives, and signed by the White House. In the likelihood that the resolution is passed, the US administration will have a period of thirty days to produce the requested report after which, the Congress would be allowed to “condition, restrict, terminate or continue security assistance to Israel” under the US law, confirmed The Guardian.
