Quetta: In a significant development, Balochistan’s Minister for Irrigation, Mir Sadiq Umrani, has announced that the province is now receiving its full share of water from the Indus River through the Pat Feeder canal. This marks the first time in 15 years that Balochistan is receiving its complete quota.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Minister Umrani disclosed that 6200 cusecs of water are being released into the Pat Feeder canal from the Sukkur Barrage. This achievement follows a brief disruption in water supply caused by damage to three gates of the Sukkur Barrage, which has since been repaired.

“This is a historic moment for Balochistan as we are finally receiving our full share of water from the Indus River,” said Umrani. He emphasized that this achievement is crucial for the province’s agriculture and overall water management.

To further bolster water distribution, the provincial government has sanctioned Rs64 billion for the cleaning (Bhalsafai) of the Pat Feeder canal. This substantial investment is aimed at increasing Balochistan’s water intake from the Indus River and improving the efficiency of water delivery systems across the province.

Minister Umrani also addressed allegations of political retribution concerning recent government actions. He clarified that the measures taken against certain individuals were not politically motivated but were instead carried out under the directives of the Balochistan High Court to combat water theft. “The court’s orders were clear: to stop water theft and ensure fair distribution. Our actions are purely in compliance with these legal directives,” he stated.

The uninterrupted flow of water is expected to have a positive impact on the province’s agricultural sector, which relies heavily on the Pat Feeder canal. Farmers and local communities have welcomed the news, expressing hope that consistent water supply will lead to improved crop yields and economic stability.

This development is a major step forward in addressing the long-standing water distribution issues faced by Balochistan. It reflects the provincial government’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to water resources for all its regions, ultimately contributing to the overall socio-economic development of the province.

As Balochistan continues to receive its rightful share of water, the focus will now shift to maintaining this flow and implementing further infrastructure improvements to support sustainable water management practices in the region.
