The ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel is unfolding amid a backdrop of deep financial and political instability in Lebanon. The country is still grappling with the severe aftermath of its 2019 financial collapse, which has left its economy in a poor state. The potential for this conflict to escalate into a full-scale war poses significant risks to Lebanon, further threatening its already delicate situation.

Lebanon is housing one of the largest refugee population per capita in the world, with approximately 1.5 million Syrians living in the country. About half of these refugees are officially registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). With a native population of around 4 million, the influx of refugees has placed immense pressure on Lebanon’s resources and infrastructure. As global attention shifts to other crises, international aid for the Syrian refugee situation has been dwindling. Despite differing political views, there is a consensus among Lebanese leaders that the Syrian refugees should eventually return to Syria. [As should Afghani refugees to be sent back to Afghanistan.]

Recently, tensions have escalated with Israel’s military claiming that it struck a Hezbollah weapons storage facility. However, the Lebanese Health Ministry reported that the strike actually hit a residential area in Nabatieh, resulting in the deaths of a woman and her two children and leaving five others injured. In response, Hezbollah launched retaliatory rocket and drone attacks.

Since the start of Israel’s military operations in Gaza in October 2023, which were a response to attacks by Hamas and other Palestinian groups, almost 200,000 people have been displaced along the “Blue Line” that separates southern Lebanon and northern Israel. By 2024, the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in Lebanon had risen to 3.7 million, including crisis-affected Lebanese, Syrians, Palestinians, and other migrants. The ongoing conflict has severely weakened the Lebanese state’s ability to address its political, economic, and security challenges. The question now is whether this situation can be salvaged, and if so, who will step forward as a mediator to bring peace to the region?

Good analysis. Unfortunately Hizbullah is fighting with rockets and drones which are destroyd
on air by Israeli air defence system provided by US and its cronies. There is a dire need of hour
whole Muslim ummah get united against Israel to teach them a lessen but it looks like a pipe dream.
If whole West can support Israel then what is the hitch in defending Lebanon and Gaza by Muslim Ummah? Is lip service sufficient?
