The Politics of Religion in India: Hindutva's Manipulation of Hinduism | Baaghi TV

Hindutva, a political ideology, is often mistakenly equated with Hinduism, a diverse and ancient religion. This manipulation distorts Hinduism’s image, focusing on a narrow and exclusive interpretation promoting acts of violence and hatred towards the religion itself. The emergence of this Hindu nationalist ideology has posed a challenge to the concept of India as an inclusive and secular nation-state.

To understand how this ideology has been deliberately constructed, it is crucial to recognize that it bears no relation to the fundamental tenets of Hinduism. Hinduism champions diversity, inclusivity, and tolerance, highlighting the importance of individual spiritual journeys. It upholds the values of non-violence (ahimsa) and promotes peaceful coexistence. In stark contrast, Hindutva has been associated with acts of religious intolerance and violence directed at minority groups, especially Muslims and Christians in India and Pakistan. This stands in opposition to the core principles of Hinduism, which call for respect and harmony among all beings. By interpreting Hindu scriptures and historical occurrences in a selective manner, Hindutva aims to forge a monolithic Hindu identity, thereby marginalizing minority communities and stifling dissenting voices within Hinduism itself.

With the ascent of the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), particularly under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Hindutva ideology has taken on a more extreme political dimension. Research from Washington indicates that anti-Muslim hate speech surged by 62% in the latter half of 2023, averaging nearly one incident each day. This intertwining of politics and religion has resulted in heightened religious tensions and violence. While Modi’s administration has not directly targeted mainstream media within this political framework, it has adeptly utilized social media platforms to sway Indian citizens, many of whom possess only basic literacy skills. This manipulation is a significant factor contributing to Modi’s growing popularity in India, as he capitalizes on his religious appeal.

This nasty politics has not only eroded the true spirit of democracy in India but also has questioned the core principles of Hinduism itself. By fostering education, critical thinking, interfaith dialogue, and support for secular values, we can illuminate the distinction between the ancient, inclusive philosophy of Hinduism and the divisive, political ideology of Hindutva.
