A delegation of All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu and Kashmir, (APHC-AJK) chapter has submitted a memorandum to UN office in Muzaffarabad, urging the international community to uphold the right of the Kashmiri people to self-determination.
In the memorandum, the APHC AJK highlighted the solemn commitment made by the United Nations to the people of Jammu and Kashmir on January 5, 1949, to hold a free and impartial plebiscite to determine their political future. However, seventy-six years later, the Kashmiri people remain deprived of this fundamental right.
The APHC emphasized the immense suffering faced by the Kashmiri people under Indian occupation, which has been marked by decades of political, social, and economic suppression. The memorandum also drew attention to the widespread human rights violations occurring in the occupied territory, which continue to affect the lives of the people in Jammu and Kashmir. APHC pointed out that despite international promises, the situation remains dire, with no concrete steps taken to address the concerns of the Kashmiri people.
In its appeal to the United Nations, the APHC called for a series of actions to address the ongoing dispute and human rights abuses in the territory. The APHC urged the UN to conduct an independent investigation into the grave human rights violations occurring in IIOJK. Additionally, it called for the safeguarding of human rights defenders and activists who are increasingly under threat in the territory. The APHC also demanded that those responsible for these violations be held accountable for their actions.
Furthermore, the APHC appealed for enhanced dialogue between India, Pakistan, and the representatives of the Kashmiri people to foster peace and stability in the region. It stressed the need for direct, result-oriented engagement between India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir dispute peacefully and in accordance with UN resolutions, as well as the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. The APHC urged the United Nations to fully implement its resolutions on Kashmir. APHC called on the UN to take immediate steps to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the long-standing dispute and address the grave issues facing the Kashmiri people.
