The Indian Congress doubled down on its claim that Narendra Modi “surrendered” and agreed to a ceasefire with Pakistan after a call from US President Donald Trump.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Congress leader Pawan Khera said a country’s identity cannot be conflated with that of the Prime Minister.

“Don’t assume that India is Narendra or Narendra is India. He makes grand speeches but ends up surrendering. Just days ago, they talked about China, and now, not even once is China uttered,” Khera said.

The remark is a play on the phrase “Indira is India, India is Indira”, which was famously coined by DK Barooah, the former president of the Congress, in the 1970s to describe the political dominance of Indira Gandhi.

Ever since India reached a ceasefire with Pakistan on May 10, the Congress has been demanding PM Modi to clarify repeated claims by Trump that his threat of cutting trade led both countries to end hostilities.

“On the afternoon of May 10, Trump called, saying Narendra surrender, and he meekly surrendered,” the Congress spokesperson said.

Continuing his tirade, he further said, “For the past 11 years, the bhakts have been projecting one image, but when the real picture emerged, it turned out to be Narendra’s surrender.”
