KARACHI: Veteran Pakistani actress Ayesha Khan, sister of Khalida Riyaasat, who rose to fame during the golden age of Pakistan television has passed away at the age of 77.
Khan’s body was reportedly discovered in her Karachi apartment in Gulshan-i-Iqbal area on Thursday, days after she passed away according to police reports, confirmed Arab News. According to reports, she was living alone for several years.
According to sources, Khan’s body was discovered after neighbours reported smelling a “foul odor” coming from the house. It’s not clear how Khan passed on, but the police have stated it is likely she expired due to natural causes. Speaking with Arab News, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr. Farrukh Raza said that according to the station house officer, Khan passed away “naturally”.
The actress’s body transported from Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and to the Edhi Foundation mortuary at Sohrab Goth. A post-mortem examination will be conducted at the request of the deceased’s family, confirmed police. On the other hand, an investigation into Khan’s death is ongoing.
Born in 1948, as the older sister of Khalida Riyaasat, Ayesha Khan first rose to prominence with PTV. She is best remembered for roles in Afshan, Aroosa, Family 93, Shaam Se Pehle and many more.
Messages and videos of condolences have poured in since the news of Khan’s passing initially broke. Many celebrities and colleagues from the entertainment industry have expressed their sadness on her passing. Among them, Adnan Siddiqui has shared a heartfelt message on Instagram. Taking to social media, Siddiqui wrote: “There are people you meet early in your journey who leave behind quiet but lasting imprints. For me, Ayesha Khan sahiba was one of those people”.
He added that he met the veteran actress on the set of his debut drama, Uroosa, where she played the role of his on-screen mother. Siddiqui ended his heartfelt message by saying Khan’s absence will be “deeply” missed.
Other actors, including Saba Faisal and Farhan Ally Agha have highlighted the issue of older parents living alone in the absence of children, and the dangers the situation posses for their health.
