ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has taken serious notice of a hygiene-related incident in the Parliament cafeteria and ordered the immediate termination of its existing food services contract.

According to a spokesperson for the National Assembly, the decision was made following reports of unsanitary conditions, including the alleged presence of red insects—referred to in some reports as cockroaches—found in food served at the cafeteria. The move aims to safeguard the health and well-being of lawmakers and parliamentary staff.

The spokesperson confirmed to Dawn that the cafeteria’s contract had been canceled and a new food service provider has been engaged. The Speaker has directed that a fresh agreement be signed with a contractor capable of maintaining high standards of cleanliness and food quality.

Parliamentary sources say the incident occurred approximately 10 days ago but gained public attention after a video surfaced on social media. The footage reportedly showed an MLA pointing out red insects in cafeteria food, prompting widespread concern among members of the Assembly.

In response to the outcry, several lawmakers raised questions about hygiene practices not only in the cafeteria but throughout the Parliament premises, including the lobby. The Speaker has since ordered a review of sanitation measures and has emphasized the need for strict adherence to health and safety standards across all parliamentary facilities.

Officials said the newly contracted food service provider has been selected based on improved quality controls and stricter hygiene protocols to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.
