HIROSHIMA: Japan on Wednesday commemorated the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima with a solemn ceremony at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, attended by survivors, officials, and delegates from over 120 countries and territories.

On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped a uranium-based atomic bomb, codenamed Little Boy, on Hiroshima, killing approximately 78,000 people instantly. Tens of thousands more died from injuries and radiation exposure by year’s end. A second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki three days later, leading to Japan’s surrender and the end of World War II.

During the ceremony, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui warned against rising global militarism and criticised the belief among some world leaders that nuclear weapons are essential for national security. He urged global leaders to visit Hiroshima and witness the consequences of nuclear warfare firsthand.

A moment of silence was observed at 8:15 a.m.—the exact time of the bombing. The mayor read out the annual Peace Declaration, calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Schoolchildren participated in the “Promise of Peace” segment, while a message from UN Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated support for global disarmament.

Survivors of the bombing—known as hibakusha—also attended. Their numbers have now fallen below 100,000 for the first time. One attendee, 71-year-old Yoshikazu Horie, expressed concern over current global tensions, saying they evoke memories of the past.

Japan remains committed to nuclear disarmament but has not signed the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of nuclear weapons. The Hiroshima anniversary continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the devastating human cost of nuclear warfare.
