ISLAMABAD – August 8, 2025: The Islamabad district administration has issued legal notices to more than 50 mosques across the capital — including the iconic Faisal Mosque — under the Protection of Natural Landscapes Ordinance, 1966, citing violations related to environmental degradation.
Sources within the administration revealed that mosques in various sectors and surrounding areas of Islamabad have recently received written notices. The notices allege that the construction or expansion of these religious sites has negatively impacted the city’s natural landscape, thus violating the decades-old ordinance aimed at preserving scenic beauty and green areas.

Faisal Mosque, a national landmark and the largest mosque in Pakistan, is reportedly among those listed. Also included is a mosque located in Rawal Town, which, according to sources, was constructed by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) with significant public funding.
In addition to the written notices, magistrates from various circles have also contacted mosque administrations directly, demanding formal written responses to the alleged violations.

The move has sparked outrage in religious circles. Clerics, madrassa administrators, and representatives of religious political parties have strongly condemned the action, accusing the Islamabad administration of targeting religious institutions under the pretext of legal enforcement. Many see this as a form of undue harassment.
Religious leaders have announced that a joint meeting will be held soon to formulate a collective response. However, the district administration has yet to issue an official clarification on the matter.
