He was one of the kindest, most admired, and deeply humane judges this world has ever known, a true embodiment of compassion, humility, and magnanimity. Rest in peace, the Honourable Judge.

In my experience spanning over six decades, I have never encountered a government functionary, judge, or bureaucrat who could match his qualities. Sadly, most of our so-called bigwigs are riddled with false pride, inflated egos, and a tendency toward deceitful and duplicitous behavior often taking far more money than one could ever expect.

We must remember taking money may fill your hands but giving it away fills your soul. Yet, we are so deeply immersed in the sordid affairs of this materialistic world that our appetite for wealth has become insatiable, grotesquely gargantuan. This is a bitter, heart-rending truth that pains me deeply.

When we hear the term government servant, the first thought that crosses our mind is often:

“Mainu note waha, mera mood bna”

(Give me cash, and I’ll be in the mood).

Public servants from a neighbouring district have brought countless stains to the name of public service, a truly sorry state of affairs, a veritable farce, to put it bluntly. It is disturbing and profoundly unsettling not out of malice or animosity, but as an undeniable reality.

Yes, there have been better examples, but they surface only rarely. Many such individuals now seem shrouded in mystery or consigned to oblivion. Meanwhile, Portugal today appears to have become a favored destination for our migratory flock, the Portuguese dream, so to speak.

Yes, there have been brighter examples of integrity and humility in public service, but such figures are exceedingly rarelike pearls buried deep within the sands of time. When they do appear, they barely make a ripple before vanishing from the public eye, leaving behind only whispers of their existence. Many such noble souls are now shrouded in mystery or have slipped silently into oblivion, their contributions forgotten by a society obsessed with power and wealth.

In stark contrast, the present reality paints a grim picture. For countless officials and elites, the notion of genuine service has been replaced by a relentless pursuit of privilege, often at the cost of honor and ethics. And while ideals of selflessness fade, another curious phenomenon emerges: Portugal, in recent years, seems to have become a coveted sanctuary for our migratory flock of those seeking greener pastures under the guise of opportunity, driven perhaps by ambition, perhaps by escape. One might even call it the ‘Portuguese Dream,’ a modern echo of aspirations once rooted in duty and principle, now diluted into a quest for personal gain.

Judge Caprio, however, touched the hearts of millions around the globe. Some say his profession was noble; others believe it was his compassion that truly defined him as the essence of what every human being should aspire to become in this short span of life.

You do not need a judicial robe to be kind. No arrogance. No hubris. Just pure humanity, something we sorely lack in a world dominated by self-styled, delusional figures intoxicated with power and greed.
