Islamabad – September 1, 2025: President Asif Ali Zardari has officially signed the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill 2025 into law, introducing tougher measures against terrorism while also ensuring constitutional safeguards and transparency.

According to details, the new legislation grants security agencies preventive detention of up to 90 days in cases linked to national security, defense, public order, targeted killings, or kidnapping for ransom. Any extension beyond this period will strictly require constitutional backing and legal justification.

The bill includes a three-year sunset clause, meaning its provisions will automatically expire unless renewed by Parliament. Investigations and detentions will be overseen by Joint Investigation Teams (JITs) to ensure due process and accountability.

Officials say the move reflects a “balanced approach”, strengthening counter-terrorism powers while maintaining judicial oversight and transparency. Analysts believe this step demonstrates Pakistan’s resolve to confront terrorism without undermining fundamental rights.
