Following a series of unsubstantiated claims and remarks targeting India by US President Donald Trump and his top aides, the Republican leader on Monday made another assertion to justify the steep tariffs on India, saying New Delhi had offered to reduce tariffs to zero, but that it was too late now.

In a social media post made just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, US President Donald Trump claimed that trade with India has been a complete “one-sided disaster,” alleging that the US has been unable to sell goods to India because of its high tariffs.

“They sell us massive amounts of goods, their biggest ‘client’, but we sell them very little – Until now a totally one-sided relationship, and it has been for many decades. The reason is that India has charged us, until now, such high Tariffs, the most of any country, that our businesses are unable to sell into India. It has been a totally one-sided disaster,” Trump wrote.

Reiterating a claim already debunked by New Delhi, he added, “They have now offered to cut their Tariffs to nothing, but it’s getting late. They should have done so years ago. Just some simple facts for people to ponder!!!”.

“India buys most of its oil and military products from Russia, very little from the US,” Trump repeated in his latest post.
