The Israeli Parliament on Monday described US President Donald Trump as a “President of peace” and announced plans to campaign globally for his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize next year.
The move comes shortly after Trump, who has often expressed his desire to win the prestigious honour, was overlooked this year, with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado receiving the award instead.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also announced that Trump would be conferred with Israel’s highest prize in recognition of his role in advancing Middle East peace initiatives during his presidency.
“Thank you for everything you have done for us. I have submitted your nomination to be the first non-Israeli recipient of the Israel Prize, the nation’s highest honour. As for the other prize (Nobel Peace Prize), it’s only a matter of time before you receive it,” said Netanyahu.
