HONG KONG — November 27, 2025: A massive fire has ripped through the Wang Fuk Court housing estate in the Tai Po district of Hong Kong, leaving at least 55 people dead and nearly 300 unaccounted for — making it one of the deadliest residential fires in the city’s recent history. Authorities continue rescue operations as investigations begin.
What Happened:
The blaze erupted on Wednesday afternoon in an external bamboo scaffolding surrounding one of the high‑rise buildings undergoing renovation. The fire quickly spread to multiple towers in the complex, engulfing seven of the estate’s eight buildings.

Hong Kong’s Fire Services Department escalated the situation to a “level-five alarm,” the highest classification — underlining the severity of the disaster.
More than 900 residents have been evacuated, but dozens reportedly remain trapped. Thick smoke, intense heat, and collapsing debris have severely hampered rescue efforts.

The Toll:
At least 55 people (including one firefighter) have been confirmed killed, while 279 remain missing.
Dozens more are wounded, many suffering from serious burns or smoke inhalation, as rescue teams continue to evacuate survivors.

Authorities have arrested three individuals — two company directors and one engineering consultant — on suspicion of manslaughter. They are accused of gross negligence, reportedly linked to unsafe renovation materials and fire‑safety code violations.
What Went Wrong:
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire spread so rapidly because of the bamboo scaffolding and flammable renovation materials — such as foam insulation and plastic mesh — that covered the buildings. Many residents said emergency alarms did not work, and windows remained sealed during renovation, preventing escape and trapping residents inside.
