ISLAMABAD — December 5, 2025: The Ministry of Defence has formally issued the notification appointing Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as the Chief of Defence Forces (CoD), a day after President Asif Ali Zardari approved the appointment on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.
According to the notification, Field Marshal Asim Munir will serve in the newly assigned role for a five-year term. The appointment marks a significant development in Pakistan’s higher defence structure, centralising strategic oversight under a unified command position.

In a separate order, the Defence Ministry also extended the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu as Chief of the Pakistan Air Force by two additional years. President Zardari had approved the extension earlier, with the notification confirming that the Air Chief’s new term will begin on March 19, 2026.
The extensions and new appointments come amid an evolving regional security environment, with officials stating that continuity in military leadership is critical for long-term defence planning and ongoing modernization efforts across the armed forces.
