After more than 100 deaths in Iran for the second day in a row, authorities have warned they could re-impose tougher measures against coronavirus.
Health Ministry spokeswoman Seema Sadat Lari said there had been 113 new deaths, and the death toll had risen to 8,950 since the outbreak in February.
She said another 2,449 people tested positive for the virus in the past 24 hours.
Iran eased the lockdown after seeing a drop in infections in mid-May, but infections have risen again.
There is also concern that official figures do not paint a complete picture of deaths and infections.
On Monday, government spokesman Ali Rabi criticized the public for ignoring the ban on social distance in holy places and public transport.”Although 90% of people in Tehran’s subways use masks, social distance is not taken into account. If we think the spread of the virus is out of control, we will definitely re-enforce the tough decision. ”
