Tuesday, June 23rd: The bronze statue of former US President Theodore Roosevelt has been removed as a result of the movement against racism and imperialism around the world, especially in the United States.

The statue, erected outside the American Museum of Natural History in New York, features Roosevelt on horseback, with an ancient American on one side and an African on the other. One of his grandsons agreed with the decision, saying the statue did not represent his political legacy.

However, President Donald Trump wrote in a tweet: “Don’t do it!”

The death of African-American George Floyd in police custody has sparked a heated debate in the United States over the suitability of certain statues and monuments. Symbols and monuments to support slavery in the United States and the American colony at the hands of Christopher Columbus are particularly critical.

As a result of the Black Lives Meter movement, the campaign against the statues has spread around the world and monuments have been targeted in many countries.

President Trump last week criticized the removal of such monuments, saying “the rampant left-wing mobs are destroying our history and desecrating monuments.”
