In response to a probe into a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane crash last month, PIA announced it will ground 150 pilots on charges of obtaining “fake” pilot licenses. As a result, a special Pakistan cabinet committee will finalize a government plan to set up two separate authorities by bifurcating the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) into regulatory and operational entities.

According to the details, cabinet meeting, headed by adviser to Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment Razak Dawood, will take place on August 29, 2020. The meeting shall be discussing the segregation of the CAA into the Pakistan Civil Aviation Regulatory Authority and the Pakistan Airports Authority.

The government’s plan is to attract private investment for corporatization of airports and outsourcing them. Sensing the importance of proper management, government of Pakistan made the decision as per which one entity shall overlook regulatory functioning while the other shall develop and manage the airports.

This decision was reached during one of the cabinet committee meetings in view of the fact that only six of the 44 airports are profitable. However, the upcoming committee meeting will be the fifth such meeting on the issue and after that the CAA board is also likely to meet.
