A ban on YouTube would leave thousands unemployed: Tania Aidrus
Islamabad: Yesterday, the Supreme Court had hinted at shutting down YouTube, on which now Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Imran Khan for Digital Media Tania Aidrus has issued a message saying that banning YouTube is not the solution to the problems.
YouTube was banned in Pakistan for three years, which also limited the local content production ecosystem.
Banning a platform like YouTube is not a solution. The 3 years when YouTube was banned in Pakistan it held back our content creator ecosystem which has just started to flourish now, creating employment opportunities for thousands.

Tania Aidrus added that our focus should be on ensuring better quality of content through policy and dialogue. If sanctions are imposed, we may fail to achieve our goals. Digital Pakistan cannot be built with such restrictions.
Our focus should be on ensuring better curation of content through policy and dialogue. Brute force measures like banning will not serve any purpose and will hold us back from achieving the vision of #DigitalPakistan.

It should be remembered that Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday took notice of objectionable content on social media and YouTube and hinted at shutting down the video-sharing platform in the country.
The court also hinted at shutting down YouTube in Pakistan. Justice Mushir Alam remarked that no one can share content against the United States or Europe on YouTube.
He added that there are many countries that have banned the video-sharing platform while several countries control social media through local laws.
